Is there a free Omegle alternative without video?
Yes - Chatus is a free Omegle alternative that defaults to text chat, with no video required. You can talk to strangers entirely through text, stay anonymous, and never turn on a camera. Voice chat is available as an option if you want it, but it's never required, and video isn't part of the core experience at all.
Why most Omegle alternatives push video
A lot of platforms that filled the gap after Omegle's shutdown leaned into video because it was the format Omegle was most known for, and because video generates more engagement metrics that platforms can measure. That's fine if video is what you want - but it leaves a real gap for people who want the conversation without the camera.
What text-only random chat actually looks like
On Chatus, you open the app inside Telegram, tap search, and get matched with someone new in seconds - entirely through text. There's no camera permission to grant, no lighting to worry about, no pressure to look a certain way. It's the closest thing to the original Omegle text-chat experience that still exists, rebuilt inside an app most people already use daily.
Is text-only chat less engaging than video?
Not necessarily - it depends on what you're looking for. Text removes the visual layer but keeps the conversational one, which for a lot of people is the part that actually matters. We covered this trade-off in more depth in Text Chat vs Voice Chat: text is lower-pressure, easier to multitask with, and more forgiving of pauses or short replies.
Is it really free?
Yes - the core text-based random chat on Chatus is free, with no registration required. Premium exists as an optional upgrade for features like gender search and faster matching, but it's not required to have the basic experience. See Chatus Premium Features Explained for what's included in each tier.
How does it compare to other no-video options?
Most major Omegle alternatives (Chatroulette, OmeTV, Monkey) are video-first by default, which makes Chatus one of the few that treats text as the primary format rather than an afterthought. For the full landscape, see Best Anonymous Chat Apps in 2026, Ranked.
